Students from third level colleges all over Ireland are taking the 10,000 Step Challenge. Students are encouraged to get up, get out and get walking for health, for the commute and for fun! Students are asked to get into a team of 3 people, register online and aim for 10,000 Steps or more every day this week. There are lots of prizes awarded throughout for students reaching this daily target.
This year Get Ireland Walking is supporting the event by leading a number of group walks in campuses around the country. Campuses are also organising fun events such as treasure hunts, games, walks to local areas, ‘selfie’ competitions and dance events to help students reach their 10,000 step daily target.

The Smarter Travel Campus ’10,000 Step Challenge’, is organised by the National Transport Authority and runs from Monday 7th to Friday 11th of March 2016. This event is open to all third level institutions who are partners of the Smarter Travel Campus programme.
The Smarter Travel Campus Programme is implemented by the National Transport Authority with funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. The programme is aimed at Third Level Campuses in Ireland seeking to develop Workplace Travel Plans. Workplace Travel Plans have been shown internationally to reduce single occupancy car use on the commute by between 10% and 24%. Workplace Travel Plans also reduce costs associated with parking, business travel, fleet, CO2 emissions, absenteeism, and access issues.
