In recent weeks, the National Transport Authority’s Smarter Travel Mark has been awarded to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, KPMG Ireland – Stephen’s Green, and Sport Ireland Campus among others. To date, sixty organisations have achieved the Smarter Travel Mark.
The Smarter Travel Mark, an initiative of the National Transport Authority (NTA), recognises organisations that facilitate and promote sustainable travel practices such as walking, cycling, using public transport and carpooling on the commute and beyond.
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has been at the forefront of sustainable travel initiatives, with numerous programmes aimed at reducing car dependency and enhancing pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. These initiatives include the introduction of 98 bike parking spaces, a bike wash station, maintenance stands, day lockers, and a variety of bike stands for standard bikes, e-bikes, and cargo bikes. Additionally, bike, e-bike, and cargo bike facilities have been introduced at the Ballyogan Operations Depot to provide outdoor teams and staff with safe parking and charging options, supporting sustainable daily operations and has expanded their e-fleet.
KMPG Ireland – St Stephen’s Green
KPMG Ireland’s office at Stephen’s Green has also achieved the Smarter Travel Mark by integrating sustainable travel policies into their corporate culture. Their efforts include the provision of facilities for cyclists and incentives for employees to use public transport. These measures reflect KPMG’s commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
Sport Ireland Campus
Sports Ireland Campus, a major hub for athletic and recreational activities, has made significant strides in promoting sustainable travel among its staff and visitors These include the installation of cycle repair stands across the campus and the provision of umbrellas for Sport Ireland Facilities (SIF) staff at key reception areas.
Additionally, there is an ongoing development of both a communications plan to promote active travel and a carpooling initiative specifically for SIF staff. The campus also offers a free bike rental scheme for staff, provides information on active travel options on its website, supports a cycle-to-work scheme, and runs active staff and wellness initiatives. Their initiatives not only support environmental goals but also promote a healthier lifestyle.
The Smarter Travel Mark certification is an opportunity for organisations to facilitate, support and promote sustainable travel initiatives for their workforce, students and visitors.
