National Household Travel Survey 2023
The National Household Travel Survey 2023 is a nationwide study of Ireland’s travel habits.
Details on the NTA’s most recent National Household Travel Survey in 2023 were released in Q3 2024. The NTA extends its sincere thanks to all the people who very generously gave of their time to participate in the survey and fill in the household questionnaire and travel diaries.
The household travel data provided is of tremendous use for transport modelling, planning and investment. It is aimed at improving Ireland’s transport system and reducing our CO2 emissions.
A noteworthy trend** is that the average trip length (as reported by survey participants in 2023) was 4.6% lower than in NHTS2022.
For female participants the average trip distance in kilometres was 7% lower in 2023 compared with the NHTS 2022 survey. Both surveys were identical in principle and practice, but with different randomly sampled households.
