The Smarter Travel Cycle into Summer is a fun, free team event. The aim is to clock up as many journeys on your bike as you can during the event and to encourage your teammates, especially those who haven’t been on a bike for a while, to do the same. There are some fantastic prizes to be won. The event is part of the Smarter Travel Programme for large employers and third level campuses promoting more sustainable travel. Cycle into Summer is open to all staff and students from workplaces and campuses that are partners of the programme. For further information email info@smartertravelworkplaces.ie
- Form a team of 2-4 people. We would highly encourage you to have at least one ‘new’ cyclists on your team.
- There is no minimum number of trips new cyclists must make for this challenge, so don’t worry if you’re taking your time building up trips.
- Choose your Team Name
- Nominate a Team Captain. Your Team Captain will be the main point of contact for your team and will set up your team on the Active Travel Logger.
- Get on your bike and log your trips!
- Every participant must register individually and log their trips. Click here for more information »
Distances aren’t logged as we want to make the competition open to as many new, returning and occasional cyclists as possible. If the competition was based solely on distance, club cyclists doing one long cycle at the weekend would leave everyone else in the dust!
By making 1 trip = 1 point, the efforts of someone who hasn’t cycled for years are appreciated as much as someone who cycles many miles every weekend for leisure.
You can see how you and your team are doing when you log into your Active Travel Logger and go to ‘Team Progress’. On this page, you will see your team average figures to date. Your team’s progress will also be shown on the Leaderboards.
Winners of the Cycle into Summer Competitions will be published on www.cyclechallenge.ie.
You could use a Dublin bike, a TFI Bike in Cork, Limerick or Galway, a company fleet bike or borrow one from a friend to clock up a few journeys.
Yes, spot checks are carried out throughout the event and the final Leaderboard will be published a few days after the end of the event to allow for a Quality Assurance on the accuracy of the top teams’ entries.
Cycle into Summer is currently only open to staff and students in organisations that are Smarter Travel Partners. To see if your organisation has registered to take part, please see the section above.
Using a static bicycle does not count towards cycle journeys. The purpose of Cycle into Summer is to encourage participants to cycle on the commute, on shopping trips, and for leisure and pleasure.
Cycle into Summer is open to people of all cycling abilities whether using a pedal bike, an e-bike, an adapted bike, trike, hand bike, or tandems that offer more support. All participants need to use a bike during the event.
